3. Local duty free conglomerates see revenues soar
Purchases by Chinese merchants drive sales growth

Sales of conglomerate duty-free shops in Jeju have been on a sharp rise.

According to the Jeju branch of the Bank of Korea, sales of duty-free shops in Jeju during the first quarter of this year increased by 32.7 percent compared with the same period last year.

The sales growth rate has been above 30 percent since the third quarter of last year.

The Bank of Korea analyzed that the huge market expansion of Chinese e-commerce, especially Wechat’s Weishang, a Chinese online shopping stored based on Wechat’s social media platform, has led to a significant increase in sales of conglomerate duty-free shops in Jeju.

Officials predicted the sales of large duty-free shops will continue to grow due to increasing demands from merchants who purchases tax-free goods in South Korea and sells them in China.

Officials added that small local duty-free shops are suffering from financial difficulties and increased polarization between the conglomerate and local shops is expected.

지난해 3, 4분기에 이어 30%대의 높은 증가세를
이어가고 있습니다.

한국은행은
SNS를 통해 상품을 판매하는
일명 웨이상을 중심으로
중국 전자상거래 시장이 크게 확대되면서
도내 대기업 계열 면세점 매출이 크게 증가한 것으로 분석했습니다.

특히, 기업형 대리구매인의 수요 증가로 당분간 대기업 계열 면세점의
매출 증가가 이어질 것으로 봤습니다.

반면, 지역 면세점은 운영난을 겪고 있어
업체 간 양극화가 더 심해질 것으로 전망했습니다.
