Two men received prison sentence for deliberately killing pine trees with herbicide to illegally transform forest lands to apartment sites.

Jeju District Court Judge Cheong Bong-ki sentenced the 61-year-old construction worker, surnamed Lee, to one year in prison for ordering the accomplice to wither pine trees in forest lands in Seogwipo in May 2017.

Lee’s accomplice was a 61-year-old man surnamed kim, who is the head of an agricultural corporation. He was sentenced to 10 months in prison with two years of probation on charges of using herbicide to kill more than 630 pine trees in nine lots of land.

Judge Cheong explained that the intent of the crime is egregious as the offenders killed hundreds of pine trees just to get profits by changing land use and selling lands.

소나무를 고사시킬 것을 지시한 혐의로 기소된
건설업자 61살 이 모 피고인에게 징역 1년을 선고했습니다.

이 모 피고인으로부터 지시를 받고 제초제를 이용해
9필지의 소나무 630여 그루를 고사시킨 혐의로 기소된
농업회사 법인 대표 61살 김 모 피고인에게는
징역 10월에 집행유예 2년을 선고했습니다.

정 부장판사는 해당 토지에 개발 허가를 받기 위해
소나무 수백 그루를 고사시켜 죄질이 매우 나쁘다며
양형 이유를 설명했습니다.
