Inappropriate use of device can cause ship accidents

Local coast guards arrested 44 people for illegally selling and using unauthorized Automatic Identification System imported from China.

Three people, including a 62-year-old person surnamed Kim, sold unauthorized AIS to 41 people including a 40-year-old captain surnamed Cho. They attached the unauthorized devices to their fishing nets to easily locate their fishing equipment.

AIS is an automatic tracking system of ships used to prevent ships from colliding at sea. However, when it is attached to objects other than ships, the objects are recognized as ships and cause accidents.

중국산 무허가 선박자동식별장치를 수입·판매하고 사용한 이들이 해경에 무더기 검거됐습니다.

제주해양경찰서는
적합성 평가를 받지 않은 선박자동식별장치인 AIS를
중국으로부터 불법으로 수입하고
어민들에게 판매한 62살 K 씨 등 3명과
이를 구매해 사용한
어선 선장 40살 J 씨 등 모두 44명을 적발했습니다.

이들은 어선에서
어구 위치를 쉽게 찾을 목적으로
AIS를 어망에 부착해 이용한 것으로 알려졌습니다.

AIS는 해상에서 선박끼리 충돌을 방지하기 위한 장치로서
선박이 아닌 어구 등 다른 물건에 부착하면
항해 전파 교란으로 사고 위험성이 있습니다.
