As we’ve seen in the news in the past few weeks, the summer season has ramped up and people are enjoying the island's beautiful beaches. Today on Jeju A to Z, Todd Thacker highlights four northside beaches that are particularly popular.

Sand, surf, and especially space. These are some of the most attractive features of Jeju’s beaches. So let’s dive right in with four great examples for you to choose from.

First off: Iho Beach, a spot that’s as close and convenient as you can get to Jeju City.

This sandy beach is 250 meters long and 120 meters wide. But its average depth and slope is shallow enough for kids to swim safely. Facilities include changing rooms and freshwater showers. Its nearby camp site can accommodate up to 500 people. Night hours with extra lighting and lifeguard supervision also make it family friendly for a cool dip after dinner.

Next is Gwakji Beach to the west at Aewol-eup. It is one of Jeju’s largest, most spacious, and family friendly beaches. It has all the usual amenities, including a playground and freshwater fountain for kids. For swimmers, lifeguards are on duty throughout the day and there’s a nice selection of small restaurants and cafes nearby.

[Slug CG] Hamdeok Seoubong Beach: Modern amenities, night hours

Hamdeok Beach, east of Jeju City, is roughly 500 meters wide with shallow water and virtually no large waves. The modern changing rooms, showers, parking for 300 cars, private lodgings, and camping grounds set it apart. Night hours also let more people enjoy it through the summer.

And last but not least is Gimnyeong Beach. It may be relatively small, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in beauty.

The ocean and sand here radiate a delicate turquoise and white hue. It is popular with scuba divers and majestic sailing vessels pass by on their way to the nearby yacht club.

Swimmers are overseen by on-duty lifeguards and can use the nearby changing rooms, showers, and convenience store.
