Revision bill suggests heightened passenger ship security check

Lawmaker Park Dae-chul proposed a revision bill in response KCTV News report on lax security checks of domestic ferries last month.

Park proposed a revision of Shipping Law to conduct mandatory security screening for domestic ferry passengers and their baggage.

The bill calls for security checks of both ferry passengers and their carry-on goods and baggage. Fines up to 3 million won will be levied on those who violate the law.

The security system of domestic ferries have been criticized for their laxity after police investigations found that Koh boarded a ship with a suitcase filled with dismembered body parts of her ex-husband and threw it into the sea.

여객선 보안검색 강화…'고유정 방지법' 발의

보완책을 담은 법 개정이 추진됩니다.

박대출 국회의원은
국내 여객선 이용객들의 소지품과
수화물에 대해 보안검색 절차를 거치도록 하는
해운법 일부개정안을 대표 발의했습니다.

개정안은 여객선 승객과 휴대물품,
위탁수하물 등에 대해보안검색을 실시하고,
이를 어길 경우
300만 원 이하의 과태료를 부과하도록 했습니다.

앞서 고유정이 살해한 전 남편 시신을
여행용 가방에 담아 여객선에 탑승한 뒤
바다에 유기한 사실이 확인되며
보안검색이 허술하다는 지적을 받아 왔습니다.
