Head of National Police says officers must respect human rights

National Police Agency Commissioner General Min Gap-ryong officially apologized to Gangjeong villagers after an investigation found human rights violations during the naval base construction in Gangjeong Village.

The Commissioner General admitted at a briefing session that the local police showed a disregard for human rights and overuse their power in the naval base construction project.

He said he will work to make amends to the victims and improve the police operation system to become human rights-friendly.

Earlier, a fact-finding committee confirmed that the police had taken violent acts against the anti-naval base groups and recommended authorities to improve inspection methods.

그러면서 피해자들의 상처를 치유하고
피해 회복 노력을 계속하는 한편,
경찰 운영 시스템을 인권친화적으로 개선하겠다고 덧붙였습니다.

앞서 진상조사위원회는
해군기지 반대 측에 대한
경찰의 강제 연행과 폭력행사가 확인됐다며
채증 방식과 통행권 등에 대한 개선을 권고했습니다.
