1. Lawmaker Kang Chang-il pushes for mayoral election system
Mayors to serve maximum 3 terms of 4-year

Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Kang Chang-il is proposing an amendment bill for the Jeju Special Act to implement direct mayoral elections.

Kang’s office is currently reviewing the draft of the revision bill and plan to propose it within this month. The office aims to introduce direct mayoral elections in 2022 local elections.

The draft limits the Mayor’s term to four-year and stipulates that mayors can serve a maximum of three consecutive terms. Political parties are prohibited from recommending candidates for mayors.

The passage of the revision bill for mayoral elections is expected to gain speed as the legislative process is under way and the National Assembly is working to revise the Jeju Special Act.

초안에는
행정시장 임기 4년에
연임은 3년으로 제한하고
정당이 행정시장 후보자를 추천할 수 없도록 했습니다.

현재 정부 입법 절차가 진행 중이고
국회에서도 특별법 개정 작업에 나서면서
답보상태였던 행정시장 직선제 제도개선도 속도를 낼 전망입니다.
