Health officials reported the fourth case of Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome this year in the island.

The syndrome, commonly known as SFTS, is an infectious disease that is contracted through tick bites.

According to the Seogwipo Health Center, a woman in her 70s living in Seogwipo City had sought treatment for symptoms of high fever and diarrhea. When she didn’t improve, she was tested for SFTS and was confirmed to have contracted the virus.

Medical authorities predict that she was bitten by the Asian longhorned tick in her garden.

15 people were diagnosed with SFTS in Jeju last year and three of them passed away.

서귀포시에 거주하는 70대 여성인 Y씨가
발열과 설사 증세를 보여 입원치료를 받아오다
호전되지 않아 진단을 받은 결과
제주도 보건환경연구원으로부터 SFTS 양성판정을 받았습니다.

보건당국은
Y씨가 자신의 집 앞 텃밭에서
바이러스를 가진
작은소 참진드기에 물린 것으로 추정하고 있습니다.

제주에서는 지난해 15명이 SFTS 확진 판정을 받아 3명이 사망했습니다.
