2. Anti-2nd airport groups oppose military usage
Prompts petition to cancel new search & rescue unit

A group opposing the island’s 2nd airport construction project claimed that the plan of establishing a Korea Air Force’s search and rescue task force in the island should be called off.

The group held a press conference last Friday and argued that the only viable explanation for designating a larger site for the new airport than that of Jeju International Airport is to use the second airport as an airforce base as well. The new airport will accommodate 50% of domestic flights.

The group asked Seoul to cancel the new airport construction project as well as establishing an Air Force’s search and rescue team, as President Moon Jae-in had opposed the team’s creation at his speech during the 2017 presidential elections.

Other two groups, including a group opposing the naval base construction in Gangjeong village also issued statements.They said Seoul’s plans will turn the island into a military base and tarnish the peaceful image of Jeju.

결국 공군기지를 겸용하기 위한 것이라고 주장했습니다.

도민회의는
문재인 대통령이 지난 2017년 대선 당시
남부탐색구조부대 창설에 반대한다는 입장을 발표했던 만큼
청와대는 부대 계획을 취소하고
제2공항 백지화를 선언해야 한다고 요구했습니다.

강정마을 해군기지반대주민회와
군사기지 저지 범도민대책위원회 등도 성명을 내고
해군기지에 이어 제주도 전역을 군사기지화하고
동북아시아 군비 경쟁의 중심지로 만들 위험한 계획이라며
중단할 것을 요구했습니다.
