Jeju Special Act amendment bill loses momentum

Seoul rejected the province’s proposal to implement a direct mayoral election system.

The provincial government explained in a briefing session on Thursday that a committee under the Prime Minister's Office rejected the proposal Monday. The Ministry of Interior and Safety thought there will be problem in the segregation of duties between the governor and mayors. It added that the election system is incompatible with the original purpose setting Jeju as a self-governing province.

Thus, Democratic Party of Korea Lawmaker Kang Chang-il’s proposal to amend the Jeju Special Act to implement the mayoral election system lost momentum.

수용하지 않으면서 정부 입법이 무산됐습니다.

제주특별자치도는
26일 브리핑을 통해
국무총리실 산하 제주도 지원위원회가
지난 23일, 행정시장 직선제에 대해
최종 불수용 결정을 내렸다고 밝혔습니다.

특별자치도 출범 취지와 맞지 않고
도지사와 행정시장간 사무 분장 문제가
불거질 수 있다는 행정안전부 검토의견이
불수용 결정의 주된 이유라고 설명했습니다.

이에 따라 행정시장 직선제 정부 입법은 무산됐고
더불어민주당 강창일 의원이 대표발의한 특별법 개정안 역시
정부 반대로 동력을 잃게 됐습니다.
