Gov't Help for Storm-hit Farms

The series of natural disasters during this season clearly have put local farmers in a most frustrating position.
Some farmers almost gave up this year’s crop harvest.
The province has announced it will provide compensation for losses sustained by farmers.
Todd Thacker reports.

[slug] Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo
This is a potato field located in (대정읍) Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo.

The leaves of the crop have turned black after massive ocean waves washed ashore when Typhoon Mitag lashed the island.

[slug] Crops severely damaged by series of typhoons
In a neighboring sweet potato field, some sections of the crop have been affected by salt water.
Garlic that should be buried has been dislodged by the storm.

[slug] Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo
Almost half of the radish fields in (성산읍) Seongsan-eup have been destroyed.
The remaining radish crop is susceptible to diseases and pests such as bacterial soft rot.

[slug] 18,000+ ha damaged by back-to-back typhoons
It is estimated that this season’s three back-to-back typhoons have damaged more than 18,000 hectares of local farmland.

[slug] Compensation claims submitted for 1,200 ha of farmland
As of the end of last month, farmers had submitted compensation claims for 1,200 hectares of farmland after Typhoon Tapah hit the island.

[slug] Province implementing measures to help farmers cope
The province announced that it will implement disaster relief measures to help farmers deal with snowballing costs.

Compensation for affected crops will vary based on the type of plant. It will range between 1.5 and 5.5 million won per hectare.



[slug] More crop varieties eligible for compensation
The number of crop varieties that are eligible for compensation has been expanded from four to 14. This includes broccoli, scallions, and garlic.

[slug] 2019 land taxes on affected farms to be refunded
Additionally, in cases where crops were abandoned or greenhouses were destroyed, farmers will be eligible for refunds on their 2019 land taxes.
