1. Water passage found in Manjanggul Cave
Researchers say the discovery to have academic value

Jeju World Natural Heritage Center found a water passage in the lava beds of Manjanggul lava tube system.

The discovery was made during an investigation to find the causes of flooding inside Manjanggul and Yongcheon Cave during heavy rainfall.

Researchers found rainwater permeating into the cave’s lava bed and collecting at an impermeable clay layer. This caused water to flow along the clay layer and pump through the cracks of the cave walls.

The center said this discovery has academic value as it will enable researchers to observe the characteristics of rainwater flowing into the ground and provide valuable data for future research.

만장굴과 용천동굴의 용암층 사이에
빗물이 흐르는 통로가 별도로 있다는 조사결과가 나왔습니다.

집중호우때마다
만장굴과 용천동굴 내부에 물이 차 올라
이에 대한 원인을 조사한 결과 이같은 결론을 도출했습니다.

용암층 틈새로 스며든 빗물이
불투수성의 점토질 토양층에 모이면서
그 위를 따라
마치 하천처럼 이동해
동굴 벽면쪽에
대량으로 흘러들거나 뿜어져 나오는 것으로 분석됐습니다.

세계유산본부는
지하로 흘러드는 빗물읠 흐름 특징을 관찰할 수 있는
수문지질학적 가치를 확인했다며
앞으로 각종 연구에 도움을 줄 것으로 기대했습니다.
