A local volunteer group is helping multicultural families in tough financial circumstances who need critical repairs or modifications to their home.
Volunteers enjoy surprising emotional benefits by giving back.
Mike Balfour reports.

[slug] Samyang-dong, Jeju City
The inside of this apartment in (삼양동) Samyang-dong, Jeju City is tidy and clean like a newly-built house.
The bathroom, recently moldy with leaky pipes, has been transformed to new condition.
The apartment’s old boiler has been replaced with a new machine.
No more worries about heating.

[slug] Yeongju Rotary Club repairs home for those in need
These changes have been made through the voluntary efforts of the Rotary Club of (영주) Yeongju.

[slug] Vietnamese widowed single mom is first beneficiary
The first beneficiary is a Vietnamese widowed single mother who lives with her seven-year-old son.

The family was selected at the recommendation of the Jeju Multicultural Family Support Center.

INTERVIEW

No heating at all. Water leaks when it rains. Housing condition was poor. We had a meeting and decided to repair the whole house even if it is costly.

"난방이 되지 않았습니다. 비가 오면 비가 새고, 내부 환경이 너무나 열악했습니다. 회의를 했는데 전면 수리를 해주자. 비용이 들어가지만..."

[slug] Furniture, home appliances also provided
Along with the home facelift, new furniture and home appliances were provided.

[slug] Members work on home repair for one month
Members of the Rotary Club of Yeongju involved in the construction business participated in the skill-based volunteering work for a month.
They learned that volunteering makes themselves happier.
The repair job was almost the equivalent of building a new home, as every corner of the house needed work.
Members got much closer while working together on the project.

"저희가 할 수 있는 직업을 통한 재능기부, 직업을 통해서 저희가 어려운 이웃과 함께 할 수 있다는 진짜 가슴 뿌듯한 보람을 느꼈습니다."

There are 20 single-parent multicultural families that don't have their own home on the island.
