There are about 1,000 foreign students attending Jeju National University.
Thus, the university is adding a Korean language education department to its graduate program to help foreigners overcome the language barrier and produce Korean language teachers.

Korean education classes had been designated one of the liberal arts.
But as demand for Korean language classes has been high, a department of Korean language and literature has been created.
[slug] 924 foreign students from 37 nations study at JNU
924 non-Korean students from 37 countries are studying at Jeju National University.
Most of them are Chinese, Vietnamese and Mongolian, but recently the number of students from other South-East Asian countries, such as Indonesia, has soared.

Various international exchange programs and the increased popularity of Korean pop culture have contributed to the rise of interest in the Korean language.
Until recently, Korean language classes had been offered only as part of a liberal arts program.
[slug] Korean language education major to be created next year
The Korean language education department will be added to the graduate school of JNU next year.
The department will offer two courses: one, Korean language learning and the other, Korean teaching method.
[slug] MA, teaching certificate to be issued
Students who finish the graduate courses will be able to obtain a master’s degree and a Korean language teaching certificate.
