5. Jeju Foreign Language High School to convert into regular high school
MoE pushes for total elimination of all autonomous elite schools

Jeju Foreign Language High School will be converted into a regular high school from 2025.

The Ministry of Education announced on Thursday that it will revise the Enforcement Decree of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to rid of applicable provisions for autonomous elite schools. Thus, the ministry will be working on converting all elite schools, including foreign language and international schools into regular high schools by 2025 and improving the quality of education at regulation high schools throughout the country.

As a result, Jeju Foreign Language High School will be subject to reform. Thus, the current 4th graders who will enter high school in 2025 will be selected by the same process as regular high schools to enter Jeju Foreign Language High School.

However, the school will be allowed to maintain its name as a foreign language school and operate specialized education programs at the discretion of the school principal.

제주외고, 2025년부터 일반고로 전환

제주외국어고등학교가 오는 2025년부터
일반 고등학교로 전환될 전망입니다.

교육부는 7일
고교서열화 해소와 일반고 교육역량 강화를 위해
초중등교육법 시행령을 개정해
외고와 국제고와 자사고의 근거 규정을 삭제하고 일반고로
통합하겠다고 밝혔습니다.

제주에서는 제주외고가 해당되며
현재 초등학교 4학년 학생들이 고교생이 되는
2025년 신입생부터 선발 방식을 일반고와 동일하게 바꿔야 합니다.

다만 일반고로 전환된 뒤에도
현재 '외국어고' 명칭은 계속 쓸 수 있고,
학교장 재량에 따라 특성화된 교육 과정도 그대로 운영할 수 있습니다.
