Only one fourth of local pet population registered

Islanders are showing little enthusiasm towards the pet registration system although it has been mandatory to register pets since 2014.

The province estimates a pet population of 95,000 dogs and 34,000 cats on the island. However, only 38,000 pets have been registered through this October, which is only 25% of the total number of pets in Jeju island. Pet registration has been mandatory since 2014, yet only 25% of the local pet population are registered.

Meanwhile, local officials have only conduct tree crackdowns on pet registration this year.

반려동물 등록제 참여 저조…등록률 25% 불과

반려동물 등록제가 지난 2014년부터 의무화됐지만
제주지역 참여율은 저조한 것으로 나타났습니다.

제주도에 따르면
도내에서 반려동물을 키우는 가구는 약 32%로
반려견은 9만 5천마리, 반려묘는 3만 4천마리로 추정됩니다.

하지만 지난 10월 말까지 등록된
반려동물의 수는 추정치의 25% 정도인 3만 8천여 마리에 불과합니다.

이와함께 반려동물 등록제 위반 단속은
3차례에 그치는 등 단속과 계도에 손을 놓고 있다는 지적입니다.
