Increasing yellowtail catch in Gangwon-do province enhances struggle

The yellowtail season is back, but local fishermen are struggling due to falling prices and sluggish consumption of the fish.

According to the province, the price of yellowtail per kilogram was 2,800 won, down nearly 30 percent from 3,800 won last year.

In particular, medium-sized yellowtail catch has increased in Gangwon-do Province, thus adding more problems for the local fishing industry.

Local fishermen are trying to come up with measures to cope with this situation by voluntarily stopping fishing and holding promotions by offering yellowtail at low prices.

1킬로그램당 방어 가격은 2천 800원으로
지난해 3천 800원에 비해 30% 가까이 떨어졌습니다.

특히 제주에서 가장 많이 나는 중방어의 경우
강원도 등
다른 지역에서의 어획이 증가하고
소비도 활발히 이뤄지지 않아 골칫거리가 되고 있습니다.

어민들은
한때 자발적으로 조업을 중단하고
저가에 판촉행사를 벌이는 등
자구책 마련에 고심하고 있습니다.
