5. Local population has increased by 25% over 20 years
Natural population decrease in Jeju to start from 2030

Population in Jeju has increased steadily over the past 20 years, but the number of young adults has decreased during the same period.

According to the data on Jeju’s population change released by the provincial government, Jeju’s population has increased by 25%, from 534,000 in 1998 to 667,000 in 2018.

However, the number of islanders between the ages of 20 and 34 has reduced by 30,000 during the same period.

The data states that the number of island residents will peak in 2043 by hitting 788,000 and decline afterwards.

It also says that natural population decrease which occurs when the number of deaths exceeds the number of births will start in Jeju Island from 2030.

제주지역 인구가 지속적으로 증가한 반면
청년 인구는
오히려 줄어든 것으로 나타났습니다.

제주도가 발간한 '제주 인구변화' 자료에 따르면
제주도 인구는 1998년 53만 4천명에서
지난해 66만 7천명으로 20년 만에 25% 증가했습니다.

반면 20살에서 34살까지 청년인구는
같은 기간 3만명 넘게 줄었습니다.

미래 총 인구는
2043년 78만 8천명으로 정점을 찍은 뒤 감소할 것으로 예측됐으며
특히 2030년부터
사망자 수가 출생아 수를 역전해
자연 감소가 시작될 것으로 전망됐습니다.
