4. Construction of Jeju National Cemetery begins
Site to accommodate 10,000 veterans

The long awaited construction project of the Jeju National Cemetery has begun.

The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs held groundbreaking ceremony of the National Cemetery at a site in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju City yesterday. The Ministry will spend 51.7 billion won to build the cemetery by the second half of 2021.

The 274,000-square-meter cemetery can accommodate up to 10,000 veterans, as it has space for 5,000 graves and another 5,000 veterans at its charnel house.

Jeju National Cemetery will open in the first half of 2022. Veterans of the Korean War and Vietnamese War that were not buried at the Chunghon Cemetery will be laid in Jeju.

'1만기 안장' 제주 국립묘지 착공…2022년 개원

제주사회의 오랜 바람이었던
제주 국립묘지 조성 공사가 본격 시작됐습니다.

국가보훈처는 28일
제주시 노형동 부지에서
국립묘지 조성사업 착공식을 시작으로
2021년 하반기까지
국비 517억 원을 들여 공사에 들어갑니다.

제주 국립묘지는 27만 4천여 제곱미터 부지에
봉안묘 5천기, 봉안당 5천기 등
모두 1만기를 안장할 수 있는 규모로 조성됩니다.

제주 국립묘지는 2022년 상반기에 개원하며
특히 충혼묘지에 안장할 수 없었던
6.25와 월남참전 국가유공자도 안장할 수 있게 됩니다.
