3. ‘Province should set more funds to preserve Jeju Batdam’
Provincial councilors point out problems in province’s budget plan

Despite the high cultural value of Jeju Batdam, the province has set a very little budget for the preservation and management of the island’s cultural heritage.

Batdam is the island’s traditional stone walls registered as one of the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems.

The provincial council’s Special Committee on Budget and Accounts held a meeting to review next year's budget and provincial councilor’s pointed out that the budget plan only reflects 8 percent of 15.2 billion won, which is the actually required amount to properly preserve and manage Jeju Batdam. They said the amount is based on the middle and long-term management plan for Jeju Batdam that was established in 2016.

Furthermore, lawmakers argued that the province should modify the plan to increase the supply of electric vehicles to reduce carbon footprint as it is in conflict with the existing public transportation expansion policy.

They also asked the provincial government to come up with measures to help islanders stand on their own feet as this year’s budget for small business owners and entrepreneurs has slightly decreased.

제주도 내년 예산안을 심사하는 자리에서
의원들은 2016년 수립된 밭담 보존 중장기 계획에 따라
내년까지 152억 원이 필요한 데도
실제 반영된 것은
13억 원 정도로 8%에 불과하다고 지적했습니다.

이와함께
탄소없는 섬 정책에 따라 예산을 투입해
전기차 보급을 늘리고 있지만
대중교통 확대 정책과 충돌하고 있다며
전기차 계획을 변경해야 한다고 주장했습니다.

의원들은 또
이번 예산안이 민생경제 활성화 기조로 편성됐다면서도
소상공인과
자영업자 예산은 실제 소폭 감소했다며
제주도가 자생력 강화 방안을 마련해야 한다고 주문했습니다.
