Researchers ask for local opinion poll on dual police system

The National Assembly Research Service's analysis has concluded that expanding the size and role of the Jeju Municipal Police Agency is inefficient.

Since last April, the Jeju Municipal Police Agency was under a test run to expand its size and took over duties from the national police such as emergency police dispatch, managing lost property and road traffic.

The National Assembly Research Service said it is hard to say that Jeju has become dramatically safer with the expanded size and role of the Jeju Municipal Police Agency compared to when the province was under the national police system.

Thus, the institute said it is necessary to conduct a local opinion poll on whether islanders are willing to accept the change from the current national police system to the municipal police system and examine the feasibility of a dual police system.

제주지역 치안이 획기적으로 향상됐다고는
보기 어렵다고 지적했습니다.

이에따라
주민투표 등을 통해
현행 국가경찰제에서 자치경찰제로 변화에 대한
수용 의사를 확인하고
경찰조직이 이원화될 수 있는지 가능성을
타진할 필요가 있다고 제안했습니다.

제주 자치경찰은
지난해 4월부터 확대 시범운영을 실시해
국가경찰 업무였던 112 신고출동,
유실물, 교통외근 등의 업무를 이관받아 수행해 왔습니다.
