4.3 to be newly defined as a national historic event

The contents on the April 3rd Incident in Korean History Textbooks for high school students will be drastically revised from next year.

Superintendent of Education Lee Seok-moon held a press conference yesterday morning and said that all korean history textbooks for high school students will follow the Provincial Office of Education’s guideline on the contents of the April 3rd Incident from next year.

According to the new standards, the incident has been newly defined as a national historic event that occured when there was a nationwide movement to establish a sole legal government of Korea.

There have long been criticisms toward how the April 3rd Incident is portrayed in Korean history textbooks as an anti-government establishment movement that precedented the Korean War.

Now, the incident will be covered in detail within two pages in the textbooks, which is a huge leap from its current length of explanation at only half a page.

내년부터 전국의 고등학교 역사교과서에 기술된
제주 4.3 내용이 크게 달라집니다.

이석문 제주도 교육감은
17일 오전 제주도교육청 기자실에서 기자간담회를 갖고
교육청이 마련한 제주4.3 집필기준이
내년 고등학교 한국사 교과서에 사용된다고 밝혔습니다.

새로운 집필 기준에 따르면
4.3은 통일정부 수립 운동이 전개되던 시기에 일어난
민족사적 사건으로 새롭게 규정됐습니다.

이전 대부분의 한국사 교과서는
제주4.3을 한국전쟁 전 역사로 기술하면서
4.3이 정부수립에 반대 폭동 등으로 규정돼
교과서 편찬 때마다
4.3 왜곡 논란이 제기됐습니다.

4.3에 대한 기술 분량도 이전 교과서에 반쪽 가량이던 것이
1~2페이지에 걸쳐 수록됩니다.
