1. Jeju Environmental Resources Recycling Center to start full operation
Incineration plant can handle 500t per day

The construction of the Jeju Environmental Resources Recycling Center in Dongbok-ri, Gujwa-eup, Jeju City, has been completed. It has been seven years and three months since the construction site for the center had been selected.

The center will begin full-scale operation from the first day of next year.

The center consists of a landfill for non-flammable waste and an incineration plant for flammable waste. The landfill can be used for more than 35 years and the incineration plant can handle up to 500 tons per day.

The center started operating its landfill this March, but the incineration plant was not finished then.

The provincial government explained that the center no longer has to bury flammable waste anymore as its incineration facilities are now ready for operation.

In particular, the province expects to produce electricity for 25,000 households annually by utilizing the heat generated from the incineration plant.

제주시 구좌읍 동복리의 제주환경자원순환센터가 입지 선정 이후
7년 3개월만에 모든 공사를 마무리하고
다음달 1일부터 본격 가동에 들어갑니다.

센터는 불연성 폐기물 매립시설과
가연성 폐기물 소각시설 등으로 구성됐으며
매립 시설은 35년 이상 사용이 가능하고
소각 시설의 경우 하루 500톤을 처리할 수 있는 용량입니다.

제주도는 이번 센터 준공으로 인해
가연성폐기물이 소각되지 못하고 매립되던 문제를
모두 해소할 수 있게 됐다고 설명했습니다.

특히 소각시설에서 발생하는 열을 활용해
연간 2만 5천 가구에 공급할 수 있는 전기도
생산할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있습니다.
