Tensions expected to heighten as government pushes forward

The construction of Jeju Island’s second airport, one of the biggest pending issues on the island, is expected to reach a turning point this year.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will announce the basic plan for the airport upon the completion of the strategic environmental impact assessment by the Ministry of Environment.

In response, the Jeju Provincial Assembly's special committee for the conflict resolution of the second airport is requesting a hold on the basic plan until their proposal to resolve conflict is complete in May.

Tensions are expected to intensify as the ministry and the provincial government are pushing ahead with the construction of the second airport.

국토교통부는
환경부 통보에 따라 진행하고 있는
전략환경영향평가 재보완 작업이 마무리되는 대로
기본계획을 고시할 계획입니다.

이에 대해 제주도의회 제2공항 갈등해소 특별위원회는
특위 활동이 종료될 때까지
기본계획 고시 보류를 요청하는 한편,
5월까지 갈등해소 방안을 마련하고
정부 등에 전달할 방침입니다.

다만 국토부와 제주도가
제2공항 건설을 강행하려는 입장이어서
이를 둘러싼 갈등은 더 심화될 전망됩니다.
