2. Korea’s first large whale autopsy conducted in Jeju
13-meter-long fin whale found in waters off Hallim Port

The nation’s first autopsy of a large whale was conducted on January 3rd on a seawall in Hallim. The 13-meter-long fin whale was found in waters northwest of Hallim Port last month.

The autopsy was conducted by 30 researchers from the World Wide Fund for Nature and 5 domestic universities, including Jeju National University. The results of the autopsy found fishing lines and fragments of fishing nets in the body of the whale, but confirmed that it was not the cause of death.

The researchers plan to conduct a more thorough autopsy to determine the main cause of death and will use the information as research material.

Upon completion of the autopsy, the skeleton of the whale will be sent to the Jeju Folk Museum of Natural History to be sampled.

2. 대형 참고래 제주서 국내 첫 부검 (번역가)

지난달 한림항 북서쪽 해상에서 발견된
13m 길이의 대형 참고래 사체에 대한 부검이
국내에서는 처음으로 3일 한림항 방파제에서 진행됐습니다.

제주대학교를 비롯해 국내 5개 대학과 세계자연기금 등
30여 명의 연구진이 참여한 가운데 진행된
부검에서는 낚시줄과 그물 조각 등이 발견됐지만
직접적인 사망 원인은 아닌 것으로 알려졌습니다.

연구진은 앞으로 정밀 부검을 통해
참고래의 폐사 원인을 규명해
대형고래 연구 자료로 활용할 계획입니다.

이와함께 부검을 끝낸 참고래 골격은
제주민속자연사박물관에 보내져 표본으로 제작될 예정입니다.
