Province lifts ban on new duty-free shops in 2020

Shinsegae Group has officially announced plans to launch a duty-free business in Jeju.

The group held a press conference at the Jeju Welcome Center and announced that they are preparing to enter the duty-free business.

The representative explained that Shinsegae is in the process of securing the venue and conducting administrative procedures to prepare for sales as they will be required to open for business within a year once the patent for the duty-free shop is issued.

Shinsegae is also currently in the process of contracting with a hotel in Yeon-dong, Jeju City that is owned by an education foundation and the group has also applied for a traffic impact environmental assessment for the shop.

Last year, the government withheld permission to add additional duty-free shops on Jeju due to opposition from residents.

제주에서의 면세점 사업 추진을 공식화했습니다.

신세계 그룹 관계자는
7일 제주도 웰컴센터 기자실을 찾아
면세사업 진출을 위해 준비하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.

면세점 특허를 받으면 1년 내에 영업을 개시해야 하기 때문에
사전 준비 차원에서
건물 확보와 행정 절차를 진행 중이라고 설명했습니다.

현재 제주시 연동에 한 호텔을 소유한 교육재단과
계약을 체결중이고
제주도에 교통영향환경평가를 신청한 상황이라고 덧붙였습니다.

한편 정부는
지난해 제주도의 반대로
제주에 면세점 추가 허가를 보류한 바 있습니다.
