5. Rare Jeju plant blossoms early
Unseasonably warm weather cited

The Jeju Baekseohyang, a rare flowering shrub that grows only in the island’s Gotjawal forest, has blossomed unexpectedly early this year.

The National Institute of Forest Science said that the Jeju Baekseohyang, which grows naturally in the Gotjawal forest at Hangyeong-myeon, blossomed an entire month early.

Researchers said that the early blossoms may be due to a day in early January where the peak temperature in the forest reached 18.3 degrees Celsius, the highest level recorded in the last decade.

The institute expects other spring flowers to bloom early and will continue to monitor the relationship between climate change and plant floral seasons.

개화 시기가 앞당겨진 것은
1월 초순 곶자왈의 최고기온이 18.3도로
최근 10년 중 가장 높았기 때문으로
연구소 측은 보고 있습니다.

연구소는 이 같은 이상고온 현상으로
다른 봄꽃들도 일찍 개화할 것으로 보고
기후변화와
식물계절 사이의 영향을 지속적으로 관찰할 방침입니다.
