This week on Jeju A to Z, Todd Thacker profiles the Jeju Museum of Art, the island’s first public art museum, and some of its exciting current exhibitions.

Metropolitan Seoul might garner much of the glory in the fields of art, music, and cultural events, but that probably has more to do with its size… As of the end of 2019, a mind boggling 50 percent of Koreans live in the Seoul Capital Area.

Down here on Jeju Island, though, our rural roots, population of 700,000 or so, and slower way of life still shines with art, culture, music and festivities.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the Jeju Museum of Art is the island’s first public art museum. It benefits from a magnificent location, facilities, and is just a 10-minute drive from Shin Jeju up on Hallasan Mountain.

As you walk up to the entrance of the museum you encounter perhaps the building’s most memorable feature. It’s a large reflecting pool which makes the modern architecture of the museum look like it’s floating on water.

Inside the 7,000-square-meter building is a beautiful example of multipurpose, integrated spaces. Facilities include a Special Exhibition Hall on the first floor and a Permanent Exhibition Hall on the second. The Citizen’s Gallery displays the work of Jeju painter Chang Ree-suk (장리석).
