Forecasted to cause severe traffic jams

Shinsegae Group's push for a duty-free business in Jeju City is being met with disapproval by the Jeju Solidarity for Participatory Self-government and Environmental Preservation (JSPSEP).
The organization issued a statement on Wednesday demanding that the company withdraw its plan.

They have officially announced their opposition to Shinsegae Duty Free, insisting that it would not only destroy the quality of life for residents, but the damage caused by over-tourism will be suffered by the residents, while the profits will fall into the pockets of large companies.

The Shinsegae Duty Free shop will cause immense traffic jams on the already congested Yeonbuk-ro road. The organization has suggested that Shinsegae withdraw their duty free plan entirely and have called for the government to explain its position on the project.

신세계 그룹이
제주시 연동에 면세점 사업을 추진하는 것과 관련해
제주참여환경연대가 22일 성명을 내고
사업 계획을 철회할 것을 요구했습니다.

참여환경연대는
과잉관광으로 인한 피해는 고스란히 도민의 몫이고,
관광 수익은 몇몇 대기업들의 주머니로 빨려 들어가고 있다며
도민의 삶의 질을 추락시키는
신세계 면세점 진출을 반대한다고 밝혔습니다.

특히 신세계 면세점은
지금도 교통 체증이 극심한 연북로 등을
교통 지옥으로 만들 것이라며
사업자는 계획을 철회하고,
제주도정은 이 사업에 대한
명확한 입장을 밝혀야 한다고 주장했습니다.
