5. Jeju reports warmest January on record
Average temperature tops record by almost one full degree

January 2020 was the warmest month of January on record.

According to the Jeju Regional Meteorological Administration, the average temperature of January was 9.2 ℃ in Jeju. This year, January broke the 1972 record of 8.3 ℃.

Jeju City hit 8.9 degrees on average and the average temperature in Seogwipo was 9.4 degrees.

On January 7th, the highest temperature in Jeju City was 23.6, which is the highest temperature ever recorded for the month of January since 1923 when weather observation first began.

The administration explained that the increase in temperature is attributed to a weak Siberian anticyclone moving towards the Korean peninsula and frequent warm southerly winds.

'역대 가장 따뜻한 1월'…평균 9.2도

올해 제주지역 1월이 역대 가장 따뜻했던 것으로 기록됐습니다.

제주지방기상청에 따르면
올해 1월 제주지역 평균 기온은 9.2도로
종전 최고 기록인
1972년 1월 8.3도를 48년 만에 갈아치웠습니다.

지역별로는
제주시 8.9도, 서귀포시 9.4도를 기록했습니다.

특히 지난 1월 7일에는
제주시 낮 최고기온이 23.6도까지 오르며
1923년 기상관측 이래 가장 더운 1월 기온을 기록하기도 했습니다.

기상청은
한반도로 향하는 시베리아 고기압의 강도가 약해
따뜻한 남풍이 자주 유입된 것이
기온 상승의 원인이라고 설명했습니다.
