1. Local economy hit hard by coronavirus crisis
Over 7% decline in sales reported in Jeju City

Jeju Island’s economy has been hit hard by the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, with high levels of damage reported within Jeju City.

The provincial government analyzed sales based on data from B.C. Card Company last month and found that sales had fallen 7.3 percent compared to the same period last year.

The decline in sales hit 7.6 percent in Jeju City, more than double the 2.7 percent in Seogwipo City.

Duty-free shops were affected the most, followed by large retail outlets, convenience stores, hotels, and travel businesses.

The province plans to analyze the damage caused by the coronavirus infections with big data and come up with customized measures for each industry.
