6. Number of haenyeo divers rapidly decreasing

The number of haenyeo women divers in Jeju is decreasing rapidly.

According to the provincial government, the number of haenyeo last year decreased by 78 to total 3,820 divers in Jeju.

There was an inflow of 84 divers including women returning to the profession as well as graduates of haenyeo school. However, it was not enough to offset an outflow of 162 divers that was caused by death, illness and aging.

By city, the number of divers decreased by 28 in Jeju City and 50 in Seogwipo City.

제주에서 물질을 하는 해녀 수가 크게 줄어들고 있습니다.

지난해말 기준으로
제주지역 해녀는 3천820명으로 전년보다 78명 감소했습니다.

해녀학교 수료자 증가와
기존 해녀들의 복귀로 84명이 증가했지만
고령화와 질병,
사망 등으로 인해 162명이 줄었습니다.

행정시별로 보면
제주시 지역이 28명,
서귀포 지역은 50명 줄었습니다.
