All public schools in Jeju will have their own gym facilities by the year 2024.
As school gyms provide a venue for area residents to gather for sports activities, the project is expected to have a significant effect on local communities.

Among 191 local schools, 24 don’t have a gym on their grounds.
Those schools will have a new gym by the year 2024.
[slug] 3.63 billion won to be funded by provincial office
Jeju province will fund the provincial educational office for the construction. 3.63 billion won of the provincial office’s budget will be spent by 2024.
[slug] 2.9 billion won to be awarded to 11 schools this year
This year, 2.9 billion won will be allotted for 11 schools including (사계) Sagye Elementary School, (금악) Geumak Elementary School and (애월) Aewol Middle School.
Beginning next year, the remaining schools will be funded based on the conditions of each school, taking regional balance in consideration.

The province has funded construction of school gyms since 2007 as a part of its Mid-term Plan for Sports Facility Development.

[slug] Need for school gyms highlighted due to fine dust
The need for school gyms has recently been highlighted for environmental reasons including p.m. dust issues.
Residents of rural areas have strongly demanded the construction as such facilities can be used for community events and sport activities.
[slug] Province to build gyms to benefit daily life of area residents
The provincial office is planning to build gyms that will benefit the daily life of both students and area residents.

My office is supporting the provincial educational office to build school gyms across the island. The facilities will be used for community events and sports activities, especially when it rains.

"마을행사나 동문회 체육대회 이런 것을 우천시에는 체육관을 이용할 수 있도록 문화적 행사도 할 수 있기 때문에 저희들은 읍면지역 도심지 구분 안하고 전학교가 체육관을 가질 수 있도록 도에서 지원을 하고 있습니다."
When the construction project is completed as planned, Jeju will be the first province in Korea where every school has a gym.

Meanwhile, some point out that the province should have additional plans for safety and maintenance of the school gyms and for the best use of the facilities.
