5. Seogwipo removes canola flowers due to COVID-19 anxiety
Jeju Canola Flower Festival cancelled

Seogwipo City removed canola flowers at Noksan-ro Canola Flower Road in Pyoseon-myeon on April 8th as part of efforts to maintain social distancing.

Seogwipo City made the decision through the local residents and the Gasi-ri village council. They decided to remove the flowers as visitors keep visiting the canola flower road despite social distancing restrictions.

Seogwipo City and Gasi-ri dispatched four tractors to remove canola flowers at the 10km-long canola flower road and 9.5 ha of canola flower garden near Jeju Pony Town.

Seogwipo City is asking travelers to visit the road and garden next year. It also added that the decision was made to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as well as to settle the anxiety of local residents about COVID-19.

Seogwipo City and Gasi-ri are canceling the Jeju Canola Flower Festival which was planned to be held from April 9th.

사회적 거리두기 연장조치에 따라
표선면 가시리 녹산로 인근의 유채꽃밭 제거작업을 실시했습니다.

최근 유학생 등 도내 코로나19 확진자가
지속적으로 발생하고 있지만
관람객들의 발길이 끊이지 않음에 따라
지역주민들과
가시리 마을회의 의견을 수렴해 이같이 결정했습니다.

서귀포시와 가시리는
8일 오전부터 트랙터 4대를 투입해
녹산로 일대 유채꽃길 10km와
9.5ha 면적의 조랑말타운 인근 유채꽃을 모두 없앴습니다.

서귀포시는
코로나19 확산 방지와 주민불안 해소 차원에서 결정된만큼
지역주민과
관광객의 양해를 구하고
내년에 다시 찾아줄 것을 당부했습니다.

한편 서귀포시와 가시리측은
당초 9일부터 열릴 예정이었던
제38회 제주유채꽃축제도 전면 취소했습니다.
