Large amounts of gulfweed found off the coast of Jeju
NIFS warns of possible damage to island

Gulfweed that originated from China was discovered in large quantities in the ocean off the coast of Jeju.

The National Institute of Fisheries Science said a field survey conducted last month in the northern and eastern seas of the East China Sea confirmed the large-scale spread of gulfweed.

Gulfweed clumps with a diameter of up to 50 meters were observed off the southern coast of Jeju Island.

The Institute reported that while the travel route of the gulfweed clumps is variable, it is highly likely that they will flow into the island, and warned for precautions to be implemented in order to prevent damage from the gulfweed.

해양수산부 국립수산과학원은
지난달 동중국해 북부해역과 서해 외해에서 현장조사한 결과
괭생이 모자반 덩어리가
대규모로 분포하는 것을 확인했다고 밝혔습니다.

특히 제주도 남쪽 외해에서는
최대 직경 50미터 크기의 모자반 덩어리도 관찰됐습니다.

국립수산과학원은
괭생이 모자반 이동 경로가 유동적이지만
제주에 유입될 가능성이 큰 만큼
피해가 없도록 유의해줄 것을 당부했습니다.
