Second excavation survey of underwater relics underway in Sinchang-ri
Ancient shipwreck left behind valuable goods from China


A second round of excavation has begun on the underwater site at Sinchang-ri, Hankyung-myeon.

On June 2nd, the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage and the Jeju National Museum of Korea began research on identifying the distributional patterns of the underwater relics.

A female diver discovered relics of Sinchang-ri, including gold accessories in 1983 and pottery crafts and seals made in the 12th and 13th centuries in China were discovered last year.

The site is assumed to have been the area where a trade ship sank carrying valuable goods produced in China about 800 years ago.

해녀에 의해 발견된
한경면 신창리 수중 유적에 대한 2차 발굴조사가 시작됐습니다.

문화재청 국립해양문화재연구소와 국립제주박물관은
2일 개수제를 시작으로
신창리 해저 유물의 분포 양상을 파악하는
작업에 들어갔습니다.

1983년 발견된 신창리 수중 유적에서는
그동안 금제 장신구를 비롯해
12~13세기에 만들어진 중국 남송 시대 도자기와
인장 등이 발굴됐습니다.

해당 유적은
800년 전쯤 중국에서 생산된 도자기를 싣고
바다를 오가던 무역선이 침몰한 것으로 추정되고 있습니다.
