Following the first provincial emergency relief fund, the provincial office is making preparations for the second round of payments.
The provincial council is making a request to the province to offer relief funds to every resident of the island. The suggested amount is ₩100,000 per person.
Mike Laidman reports.
The first round of emergency relief fund payments has been paid out, with the province planning to pay a total of 55 billion won to the 170,000 households that earn below the median income.
30,000 households were excluded from the first relief payment list, meaning that 15 billion won of the originally allocated budget is remaining.
More than 8,000 people have raised objections to the province based on how their health insurance premiums work.
Demands for universal benefits are growing, with the provincial council recently adding its voice to the mix.
At a review for the supplementary budget plan for the 2nd emergency relief funds - totalling 46.8 billion won - the provincial council suggested that the funds should go to all residents.
The council’s proposal is 100,000 won for each islander, meaning 63 billion would be required.
It claimed that if the 15 billion won remaining from the first payment round is added to the 46.8 billion won allocated for the second payment, everyone can benefit.
Based on these calculations, the provincial council suggested the 100,000 won payment to every islander at a recent meeting with the provincial office.
The provincial office is now examining different ranges of beneficiaries.
However, if the province accepts the demands of the council, the province’s promise to pay, for example, 1 million won to a family of four or more can not be kept.
All eyes are now on the provincial office’s decision on just who will be included in this second round of payments, and how much those payments will be.
