Community pushes back on heavy budget cuts

The provincial government is facing backlash from the local culture and art community in response to the government’s decision to cut the budget for culture and art events on the island.

The budget for events in the second half of the year will also undergo heavy cuts.

Twelve local culture and art organizations released a joint statement on Thursday, stating that budget cuts by the provincial office is a shortsighted decision that pushes local artists to the brink of extinction.

Local event management agencies also released a statement on Thursday stating that businesses involved in the event industry are in danger of shutting down and employees are facing a crisis of losing their jobs due to the cancellation of events. The groups asked the provincial government to reconsider the budget cuts that would cancel even more events on the island.
