2. Increase of net influx of population in Jeju
Residents drawn to Jeju’s low infection numbers

Jeju Island has recorded a net influx of population since the COVID 19 outbreak.

According to the National Statistical Office, although there was a net loss of some 560 people in the first quarter, the numbers showed a significant shift in the second quarter with a net inflow of 700.

Out of 17 cities and provinces across the country only Jeju Island and Gyeonggi-do Province have seen an increase in their net influx of population for three consecutive months.

The population growth is attributed to the increase in temporary residents, such as single month-long residents, and the perception of Jeju as being a safe province with the fewest number of COVID-19 cases.

제주지역 인구 순유입이 오히려 증가한 것으로 나타났습니다.

통계청에 따르면
지난 1분기 제주에서 560여 명이 순유출됐지만,
2분기 들어 700여 명이 순유입되는 등 전환세로 돌아섰습니다.

특히 3개월 연속 순유입 인구가 늘어난 지역은
전국 17개 시·도 가운데
경기와 제주 2곳 뿐입니다.

이 같은 인구 증가세는
코로나19 확진자가 가장 적은
청정 지역이라는 이미지로 인해
한달살이 같은 임시 거주자가 늘어난 데 따른 것으로 분석됩니다.
