Province sues pastor couple for ￦120M
Charges filed for false statements resulting in spread of COVID-19

The provincial government has filed a damage suit worth 125 million won against a pastor and his wife who made false statements during an epidemiological investigation.

The damage suit will cover the expenses of disinfection along with the inspection, living expenses and diagnostic costs of other contacts related to the pastor couple.

In the petition, the province stated that despite receiving a notice of punishment for making false statements regarding COVID-19, the couple misled authorities and hid their movements for more than 10 investigations that were conducted. Their false statements led to a failure in making a prompt initial response and resulted in the spread of COVID-19 on the island.

Jeju Island has also filed a separate complaint with the police against the pastor couple for obstructing the execution of public affairs.

1억 2천 500만원 상당의 손해배상소송을 제기했습니다.

손해배상 비용은
방역소독비용과 확진.접촉자 생활지원비,
검사비용, 진단 검사 물품구입비 등을 합산해 이뤄졌습니다.

제주도는 소장을 통해
확진판정을 받은 후
거짓 진술할 경우 처벌될 수 있다는 안내를 받았음에도
10여차례의 역학조사 과정에서
방문이력과 동선을 숨기고 허위 진술함으로써
신속한 초기 대처 실패는 물론
접촉자의 확산으로 추가 피해를 발생시켰다고 주장하고 있습니다.

한편 제주도는 이와는 별도로
이들 목사 부부에 대해 공무집행방해혐의로 경찰에 고발한 바 있습니다.
