The Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Service has developed and supplied a new variety of Jeju potato called (탐나) Tamna since 2017.
The variety is evenly shaped and free of common root vegetable diseases and blemishes.
Joseph Kim reports.
This is a potato field in (대정읍) Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo.
The root vegetable is being harvested under the overcast sky.
The potato harvester lifts up the big and round potatoes in rows from the bed.
Some are busy sorting quality crops to box them up.
The crop is the island’s new variety, called (탐나) Tamna, developed and supplied by the Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Service from 2017.
Compared with the predecessor species, (대지) Daeji, the new variety is more evenly rounded with good skin, has a better taste and is resistant to the common scab which is caused by the repeated cultivation of potatoes.
More potato growers choose the new variety not to be troubled with the disease.
Prices of the new variety have been set at 5,000 won higher than the predecessor species per 20 kilogram box. This helps raise the income in rural areas.
This year, the Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Service provided 7.4 tons of seeds of the new variety to local potato growers.
The cultivation area of the new variety is increasing every year.
Soon, the new potato could prove whether it would be a cash crop to local farmers.
