Number of active haenyeo in Jeju City decreases by 4.5%

The number of haenyeo actively working in Jeju City has decreased by 100 in a year.
According to a survey of female divers by Jeju City, a total of 2,141 haenyeo were actively diving as of the end of last year, a decrease of 100, or 4.5%, from the previous year.
The number of newly enlisted haenyeo stood at 21 while there was a total decrease of 121 haenyeo, which included 18 deaths, 27 discontinuations, 73 retirements, and 3 transfers to other cities.
It was also revealed that 39% of active haenyeo are in their 70s, the largest age demographic. They are followed by haenyeo in their 60s, at 32%, and divers aged 80 and older were recorded at 15%.

사망 18명, 물질중단 27명, 은퇴 73명, 타시도 전출 3명 등 121명이
감소한 반면 신규해녀 가입은 21명에 머물렀습니다.
해녀 연령대는 70대가 39%로 가장 많고
60대 32%, 80대 이상 15% 순으로 뒤를 이었습니다.
