The public opinion poll on Jeju Island’s second airport will be conducted this month following the Lunar New Year’s holiday.
The poll requested by the province and the provincial council will be carried out by nine local media outlets including KCTV.
The results will be released on February 18th, at 8 in the evening.
Todd Thacker reports.
A public opinion poll on the creation of the island’s second airport will be conducted this month.
Members of the Jeju Journalists Association, nine local media outlets in all, including KCTV, will run the poll.
The Public Official Election Act prohibits the province and the Provincial Council from obtaining and using virtual phone numbers. This precludes them from carrying out the opinion poll.
The National Election Commission has ruled that a third party can conduct the poll.
Nine members of the Jeju Journalists Association have come to an agreement with the province and the Provincial Council on the poll.
The poll will be carried out for three days beginning from February 15th.
To ensure accuracy, two opinion research firms will be used.
A total of 2,000 islanders and 500 (성산) Seongsan residents will be the respondents.
The results of the survey on the pros and cons of the new airport will be released at 8 p.m. on February 18th.
Members of the Jeju Journalists Association will submit the survey results to the province and the Provincial Council.
Provincial officials will then be able to submit the results to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport based on the authoritative interpretation of the National Election Commission.
In light of the controversial second airport project and years of debate among politicians and the general public alike, islanders will be paying close attention to the results of this month’s opinion poll.
