Risk of demographic extinction in 16 districts in Jeju
JRI stresses importance of implementing countermeasures

With some of Jeju Island’s eup/myeon/dong administrative districts facing a sharp decline in population, 16 districts are at risk of extinction, and it has been pointed out that there is a strong need for intervention.

Koh Tae-ho (고태호), a research fellow at the Jeju Research Institute, classified nine eup/myeon areas and seven dong areas as population-extinction risk zones through population analysis and response studies.

At-risk areas in the eup/myeon districts include Hangyeong, Gujwa, Namwon, and Hallim, and in the dong districts, Ildo 1-dong, Yongdam-dong, Samdo-dong, and Gunip-dong are categorized as high-risk for extinction.

Along with the establishment of a regional settlement support center, Koh proposed a balanced regional development support plan and an urban regeneration New Deal project.
