Second airport poll reveals concern over conflicts
Provincial councilors accused province of being complacent

Amid various interpretations over the results of the second airport poll, criticism has been raised by the provincial council that the provincial government is not engaging in any roles and rather encouraging conflict.

In a report on the Jeju Island's Airport Expansion Support Group on the 25th, the Provincial Council's Environment and City Committee accused the province of being complacent while waiting for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s final decision when the opinion poll showed clear conflict between the residents of the island and Seongsan-eup.

A councilor pointed out that the area around Seongsan-eup, where the airport is scheduled to be constructed, has suffered damage from regulations, such as land transaction permits over the past five years, and there is yet to be any form of compensation or remedy regarding the issue.

The province said that according to the agreement stated that conflicts should not be raised after the poll, the results of the poll were submitted to the ministry without a formal position on the second airport and policy directions would be discussed in future consultations with the ministry.

도민과 성산읍 주민이 다르게 나오면서 갈등 요인이 되는 상황인데도
제주도는 국토부의 입장만 기다리면서
손을 놓고 있다고 지적했습니다.

특히 공항 예정지인 성산읍 일대는
지난 5년 동안 토지거래 허가 같은 규제로 막대한 피해를 입었는데도
이에 대한 보상이나 구제 방안은 전무하다고 꼬집었습니다.

제주도는
여론조사 이후 갈등 유발을 해서는 안된다는 합의문에 따라
제2공항에 대한 입장 없이 여론조사 결과를 있는 그대로
국토부에 전달했고
향후 국토부와의 협의 과정에서 정책 방향을 논의하겠다고 답했습니다.
