Report
This is (연삼로) Yeonsam-ro Road, one of the main roads in Jeju City.
On this stretch of road, the average speed control has been employed since last year.
Beginning last Saturday(April 17th), the speed limit was lowered to 50 kilometers per hour.
Following the amendment of the Road Traffic Act, the speed limits in downtown Jeju have been lowered to 50 kilometers per hour for main roads and 30 kilometers per hour for backstreets.
56 areas that stretch 334 kilometers in total across the island have employed the policy.
The 56 areas are categorized as residential, commercial or industrial areas in urban areas.
Drivers are allowed to travel up to 50 kilometers per hour on main roads, and 30 kilometers per hour on narrow neighborhood streets.
Safety Speed of 5030
Main roads in urban areas: 50km/hr
Other streets: 30km/hr
The Jeju Police Agency has changed speed cameras and speed signs in accordance with the policy change.
Violators will face fines between 40,000 and 70,000 won.
Police and authorities studied the effect of a 50-kilometer speed limit on traffic time. The results showed little difference on an average of two minutes for a 13.4 kilometer long road. Meanwhile, road accidents that claim lives are expected to decrease by more than 30 percent.
To make the roads safer for both drivers and pedestrians, drivers’ understanding and awareness of the pedestrian-oriented policy is needed.
