Bid committee launched to host U.N. Climate Change Convention in Jeju

A bid committee to host the 28th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Jeju was launched at Seolmundae Women's Cultural Center on the 3rd.

During a keynote speech, Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong, co-chairman of the committee, said that the province was the closest to the global goal of carbon neutrality, with its renewable energy and electric vehicle supply. He stressed hosting the 28th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change would bring new opportunities to the province.

Provincial Council Chairman, Joa Namsoo, who served as the Co-Chairman, said that Jeju has successfully hosted international conferences, including the World Nature Conservation Congress, and said that he would make an active effort to make Jeju the final venue.

The U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change is the largest international conference in the field of climate and environment attended by 20,000 people from 197 countries, and local governments. Along with the province, Jeonnam, Busan and Incheon have entered the race to become the Korean host city as President Moon Jae-In announced his goal of attracting the conference to Korea in 2023.

오는 2023년 열리는 제28차 유엔 기후변화협약 당사국총회를
제주에 유치하기 위한 유치위원회가
3일 설문대여성문화센터에서 발족했습니다.

유치 공동위원장인 원희룡 제주도지사는 기조연설을 통해
제주는 재생에너지와 전기차 보급 등 탄소중립이라는
글로벌 목표에 가장 가까운 곳이라며
제주가 제28차 기후변화협약 당사국총회를 유치하게 된다면
제주를 한 차원 높일 중요한 계기를 얻게 될 것이라고 강조했습니다.

공동위원장을 맡은 좌남수 도의회 의장도
제주는 세계자연보전총회 등 수많은 국제회의를 성공적으로 개최한 경험이 있다며
제주가 최종 개최지가 될 수 있도록 유치에 적극 노력하겠다고 말했습니다.

유엔 기후변화협약 당사국총회는 197개국 2만여 명이 참석하는 기후환경 분야 최대 국제회의로
문재인 대통령이 2023년 한국 유치 목표를 발표함에 따라
제주를 포함한 전남, 부산, 인천 등
전국 지자체가 유치 경쟁에 뛰어 들었습니다.
