Members of People Power Party in Jeju hold rally
Controversy over chairman election process

Internal conflict amongst the People Power Party in Jeju deepens surrounding the election of its chairman.

The members of the Jeju People Power Party protested in front of the Jeju Provincial Office on July 30, criticizing the Central Party for unfairly halting the provincial party chairman election process, and trying to appoint (허향진) Heo Hyang-jin, former president of Jeju National University, a close associate of Won Hee-ryong, as the acting chairman.

The party members stated that Governor Won, who is about to run for president, is directly or indirectly intervening to take control of the faction.

Earlier, the central party of People Power Party suspended the provincial party convention, saying it needed an audit of party affairs due to the recent accusation among Jeju party members.

국민의힘 제주도당이 위원장 선출을 둘러싸고 내홍이 깊어지고 있습니다.

국민의힘 제주도당 당원들은
7월 30일 제주도청 앞에서 피켓시위을 벌이고
중앙당이 위원장 선출을 위한 도당대회를 부당하게 중단시키고
원희룡 지사 측근인 허향진 전 제주대 총장을
직무대행으로 임명하려 한다고 비판했습니다.

이어 당원들은 대선 출마를 앞두고 / 있는 원희룡 지사가
도당 장악을 위해 직간접적으로 개입하고 있다며
이를 중단하고 도당을 정상화시킬 것을 촉구했습니다.

앞서 국힘의힘 중앙당은 최근 불거진 제주도당 당원들간 고소고발 사태로
당무 감사가 필요하다며 도당대회를 중단시켰으며,
최고위원회 회의를 거쳐 제주도당을 사고당으로 정할지 결정할 예정입니다.
