The decision has been made not to hold a by-election for the Jeju Governor position, which has been vacant since Won Heeryong left the position.

The Jeju Office of National Election Commission was notified that the Jeju governor position became vacant on the 12th and held a meeting on the 20th. During the meeting it was decided not to hold a by-election for Jeju governor position.

At the meeting, some people voiced the need for a by-election to fill the vacancy. However, the office came to a final decision not to hold the election due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19 and costs for managing the election, which amount to more than 6.3 billion won.

Other reasons included a lack of opportunity to probe candidates, a short term of office, which is nine months and that local governor elections will be held right after the presidential election in 2022.
