Parts of the walls of Seongeup Folk Village in Seogwipo City have recently collapsed. Residents claim that recent sidewalk construction projects may have affected the collapse.
The Jeju World Heritage Center is stating that it has been a long time since the last restoration was done and it was inevitable to collapse to torrential rains, etc.

[Slug] Seongeup Folk Village
(성읍) Seongeup Folk Village is a small town that holds a vast amount of folklore of Jeju people over a wide period of time, and the local administrative office of (정의) Jeongui had sat in the village dating back to the fifteenth century.
It was designated as the National Folklore Asset No.188 in 1984.

Following the designation, (정의) Jeongui fortress that had encircled the village was restored from 1986 to 1989.
The wall stretches out about one kilometer.

Damages to the fortress have been observed.
Four parts of the fortress have fallen down.
Some regions have been swollen or washed away, which could collapse soon.

마을 주민들은 최근 성곽 안팎으로 진행된 둘레길 정비 공사를 성곽이 무너진 이유로 꼽았습니다.

세계유산본부는 공사와는 무관하고 최근 집중호우 때 붕괴된 것으로 보고 있습니다.

지난 2005년부터 지난해까지 성곽에 대한 보수공사는 12차례 진행됐고 최근들어 보수작업이 집중됐다고 설명했습니다.
복원한지 30년이 넘는 시간이 흐르면서 돌담 사이 흙들이 빠져나가는 등 돌들을 고정하는 역할을 하지 못하면서 문제가 생겼다는 겁니다.

세계유산본부는 복원한지 오랜 시간이 흐른 만큼 예산을 확보해 전체적인 안전진단과 함께 연차별 복원계획에 대한 용역을 실시하겠다고 밝혔습니다.
